Hello. My name is Malcolm Johnstone, and this is my production company. But no one is an island, even when they live on one. Filmmaking is a process of collaboration with others to achieve a vision. That begins with the people on my company’s Board Of Directors and extends to all those who I have worked with in the past and will work with on future projects.
One quick way to describe my writing is quirky, but with a purpose underneath it all. Sometimes the purpose is just to tell a one off joke. Sometimes it’s to go a little deeper. Some of my personal favourite writing is at the point where comedy and seriousness intersect for reasons that are down to human nature. I don’t have a preferred genre of writing, instead I tend to prefer strength of character over genre.
Why Victoria over one of the more obvious film hubs? Well, there’s personal history here for me. But more than anything, I’ve seen the movie making scene grow slowly but surely here. And it’s an exciting time to see where it goes and be part of the creative process to grow it. Also, I have several stories in mind than are island based and/or have no reason to not be made here. That doesn’t mean I’m not open to creating elsewhere, but I(and a lot of my family going back) have islands and/or the coast in my blood and in my storytelling. It’s a creative pool that I definitely want to swim in for a bit, in the shallow and the deeper ends.
